Notes on leading a Book Discussion Group

A person may take on the role of Group Leader for the time it takes to study one book or group leadership may move on after each meeting.  This decision should be made by the group, but it is important that the same person does not always assume this role and that leadership is shared.

These notes are prepared with the aim of assisting anyone leading a Book Discussion Group, whether this is the first time for you or you have lead a group many times before.

·         The leader needs to keep in mind the aims of the group , ie to provide an opportunity for group members to be challenged and to grow in faith.

·         The leader should be well-prepared for the meeting, having read the relevant chapters and study notes (if available) and any relevant reviews of background material.  The internet may assist.

·         Note what strikes you, stimulates you or confuses you as these are likely to be experiences shared by others in the group and may be used to stimulate discussion.

·         At the meeting make all the members of the group feel welcome and at ease:

o        ensure new members of the group know they are valued and that they feel comfortable to share personal experiences,

o        create opportunities for everyone to get to know each other,

o        serving refreshments provides an opportunity for informal discussion and group building.

·         Discussion should be non-competitive and a means to a better understanding of a topic.

·         Acknowledge that agreement is not necessary.  Respect for each other and attention to each other’s opinions is.

·         Do not allow one person or a few to dominate the group.

·         Draw out any reserved members of the group.

·         Keep the discussion relevant.

·         Ensure that group members know what is expected of them, including

o        reading agreed chapters in preparation for the next meeting, and

o        keeping absent members up-to-date with the group’s progress.

·         Questions for sharing if discussion is flagging:

o        Is there one thing from the book/chapter/discussion that has especially helped you in some way?

o        Is there something you disagree with?

o        Would you like to share your opinion on that issue?
